Analysis of the match between Manchester City and Liverpool
Man City and Liverpool have both returned to winning ways in the Premier League ahead of their head-to-head clash this Sunday. Both teams, who have shared the last 8 Premier League titles, are currently 2nd and 3rd in the standings.
Man City delivered an impressive performance to overcome Bournemouth, with striker Erling Haaland scoring a brace, cementing his status as one of the world’s top players. Midweek, Haaland continued his form by helping his team defeat Dortmund 4-1 in the Champions League.
However, the Etihad side has yet to beat Liverpool since 2023. In the 2023/24 season, the two teams drew 1-1 in both encounters, while the previous season saw Man City lose 0-2 in both matches. Guardiola clearly needs his forwards to be more effective to overcome Liverpool.
On the other side, coach Arne Slot had reason to be pleased as Liverpool defeated Aston Villa 2-0 last weekend, with Mohamed Salah regaining form and scoring his 250th goal for the club.
Liverpool now look sharper, pressing better and controlling the game more effectively after a run of four consecutive domestic defeats. Midweek, they continued their high-level form by convincingly beating Real Madrid in the Champions League. Slot previously defeated both Real Madrid and Man City in two consecutive matches last season and will be hoping to repeat that feat.
